The clutch at the front of the compressor engages so that the compressor will turn with the fan belt. Since the clutch is not engaging, the compressor is not turning so the ac system is NOT working. The clutch is energized when the ac is switched on, however there is a low/high pressure switch that is a part of this circuit.
This symptom indicated a failed final stage resistor on the older models (E39, etc.), but likely indicates a failing regulator on this vehicle. It's located behind the blower fan. It's now on my growing (and sometimes shrinking) list of things to work through on my new to me vehicle. 2007 X3 6MT; 2022 M3 Base.
The temp sensor in the lower hose is the one the DME uses for the Aux fan. You can’t read that temp in the cluster. The engine coolant temp sensor in the water pump will also start the Aux running as well as turning on the AC. You generally won’t see the Aux fan spinning as soon as you turn the AC on.
