How AWD Works: The Basics. There are different types of AWD systems, but most of them work the same way, in general. The big thing that an AWD system usually includes is a center differential, which is a set of gears that divides the transmission's power to the rear and front axles. An AWD system will usually also have wheel sensors that can A four-wheel-drive system combines the RWD ( rear-wheel drive) and FWD (front-wheel drive) systems acting in tandem. This system makes it possible for the engine to connect and even send power to all the wheels. A 4WD can be active every time or be switched between 2WD and 4WD when required.

4WD not engaging. I have a 2000 Chevy Silverado 1500 4x4 with an 5.3 liter motor and auto transmission. Over the past few months the truck has failed to go into 4 low at times and the service 4 wheel drive light comes on once in a while. I changed the transmission and transercase fluid but the light continues to come on sometimes.

Watch on. The default setting for the 4×4 traction systems is two-wheel drive high. You use 2H for general on-road driving. If you want to drive at higher speeds when heading off-road or encounter winter driving conditions, select the four-wheel drive high mode. The four-wheel drive low mode provides increased torque multiplication.

It covers a number of different system types, and the author happens to have the same position I have regarding how AWD / 4WD are defined. Full disclosure - I was one of the people the author consulted with.
The earliest 4WD vehicles also required stopping the vehicle completely, getting out, and locking the wheel hubs on the front wheels. These days, almost all 4WD or 4X4 systems are "shift on the fly" or "push-button" system, though some trucks still require you to know the proper sequence to engage them, such as slowing or coming to a stop, or
How the system performs: When all differentials are unlocked, the car will not be able to move if one wheel (front or rear) loses traction (is on ice or raised in the air). When the center differential is locked with the rear differential unlocked, the car will not be able to move if one front wheel and one rear wheel lose traction.

Most of these systems can be speed-adjusted below one mph and up to 20 mph before they disengage, and some will work in both 4x4 high and low-range. Toyota Tacomas Near you $45,672 MSRP
